GEOGRAPHY

This is where the highest mountains in the Middle East fall literally into the Mediterranean Sea, where one finds countless waterfalls, deep valleys and stretches of sandy coastline. Lebanon may be small but it is of epic dimensions: Two spectacular mountain ranges run parallel to each other down the length of the country: Mount Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountain range. The first range includes the highest peak in the country: Qurnet El Sauda, rising to 3.088 m above sea level and topped with snow all the year round. Between both mountain ranges lies the Bekaa valley, a vast plateau 125 km long and up 1000 m above sea level; it contains some of the most fertile agricultural land in the world.

CLIMATE
Lebanon generally enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long sultry summers and short mild winters; however, there are three main climatic zones corresponding to the three main geographical regions: the coast, the mountains and the Bekaa. Visitors can count on 300 sunny days every year, and the highest peaks covered with snow four months a year allow winter sport in six ski resorts; in the spring, it is possible to play ski and bathe in the Mediterranean sea in one day.

PROVINCES

THE SOUTH: Famous for the ancient Phoenician cities like Sidon, and Tyre, it contains two landmarks of Lebanon's modern history: Cana and Khiam detention camp. NABATIEH. MOUNT LEBANON: Major towns are Byblos and Beiteddine, the grottos of Jeita are among the world's most beautiful caverns. THE NORTH: The oldest Cedars of Lebanon grow at the foot of Lebanon's highest peak; another Phoenician is Tripoli.
